An Interview with Jewelry Designer of Sunday Morning, Rania

Rania, the product designer for Sunday Morning, is from Athens, Greece and fully enjoys making unique handmade jewelry. I am so excited that I had the opportunity to interview her and learn more about her shop! To stay up to date on things Rania is working on and new product releases, check her out on Etsy, Facebook, Twitter and her Blog.

You should also take a look at her Summer lookbook, the pictures are beautiful!

1. How did you come up with the name for your shop, The Sunday Morning?

“From my teen years, I had always made jewelry by hand, mostly from beads, and weaving techniques. I can’t really remember when I started, even though I have tried many times it is something very close to who I really am. My strongest memory though is that was usually Sunday morning when I was handcrafting them and that it was always one of the best moments of all week! After all the years that passed I still make my jewelry with the same love and passion just like I did on these Sunday mornings!”

2. Where does your inspiration come from for your designs?

“My inspiration sources are varied, I am fascinated by nature, architecture, geometrical shapes, ancient cultures and of course from my country. Greece is rich in history and culture, is known not only for its mythologies and ancient civilizations, but also for the wonderful beaches on the islands and awesome mountain views! Look up and you will see the most beautiful inspiring details in the most unexpected places! But when I need a boost of inspiration I always keep returning to my grandmother’s drawers eager to find treasures that I haven’t discover yet!”

3. What was the first piece you sold? Is there any special story to go along with this?

“I started doing all this for me, things I wanted to wear, then my friends started liking it as well, then friends of friends liked it and slowly it grew! So my first orders came from good friends! But my very first order through my Etsy shop it was a girl from Washington! It was only after 2 days I opened the etsy store and I couldn’t believe it! I was so happy!”

4. Walk me through your routine when creating your different pieces.

“First, I do a lot of online and offline research to find the materials that I use. One of my favorite things to do is go to the market and buy stones, fabrics that catch my eye without knowing in advance how I will use them. Sometimes I make mood boards with the materials, inspiring pictures and findings I want to use. Jewelry design is a live procedure, full of ideas, sketches and materials trying to create unique and high quality pieces!”

5. How would you describe the style of your work? What makes your jewelry designs so unique?

“Sunday Morning is all about unique handmade jewelry with great attention to detail. After all, it’s the little things that make all the difference! I make limited pieces in different colors which are meant to be for an elegant and sophisticated woman that believes in the beauty of simple things.”

6. What is your favorite type of piece to create and why?

“My favorite pieces are the pendants, minimal but stylish enough to transform our daily outfit. Beautiful to wear them alone or layered!”

7. Currently, who is your favorite designer? Do you aspire to create pieces similar to this person?

“Phoebe Philo, I think that she is an amazing fashion designer! When I create my jewelry I imagine a woman wearing her clothes!”

8. Did you go to school to be a designer or are you self-taught?

“Both my Bachelor and Master degrees are in Product design, I am mainly self taught concerning jewelry making, though I have attended few seminars that helped me to upgrade my skills.”

9. Do you offer custom jewelry pieces upon request? If so, what have been some of your most interesting projects?

“Yes but I haven’t received any requests yet. I would love to make special designs for weddings, I believe that this is a special day for a bride and that she should wear something that has her own personal touch! A memoire from the beginning of a new life!”

10. Aside from owning your own business and being a designer, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

“Athens is a city of different aspects. One of my favorite places, especially during fall and winter is the historic center and the area around the ancient rock of Acropolis. During spring and summer I adore spending my time in places near the beautiful Attica coastline. There are numerous charming places to eat or drink. I also enjoy the countryside as much as I can! Ski resorts in the winter and beautiful Aegean islands on summer!”

11. What is your favorite piece of jewelry you have made and why?

“A pendant that I made for a specific exhibition! I was so happy to be part of it that I kept it after the end as memoire, I am wearing it at least twice a week!”

12. You just released your summer lookbook, can you walk us through the photoshoot?

“It was my first organized photoshoot! I was thrilled! Spent days trying to decide the theme, the place, to find the clothes and all the other objects! I was lucky to have by my side an excellent photographer Sonia Farasopoulou who also happens to be a very good friend of mine, it took as 2 full days to complete. We had a lot of fun! We also had an assistant named Pepper! Sonia’s dog!”

13. What are you plans for the future?

“I am currently designing the Fall Winter collection and I am in the process of developing new products apart from jewelry. If everything goes as planned you will see new accessories additions in Sunday Morning’s collection!
