I’m excited to introduce you to Tuyaymya, the creative and innovative fashion designer behind White Tee Black Dress. Tuyaymya created White Tee Black Dress back in 2012 as a way to express her creativity and harness her passion for the fashion industry. She’s been featured in Cosmopolitan and Keeping It Real, among other publications. In addition to maintaining her shop, Tuyaymya also writes for Shimmer Fashion San Diego and San Diego Style Bloggers.
I’m thrilled to have had the chance to learn more about White Tee Black Dress and the inspiration behind a few of Tuyaymya’s designs! Enjoy the interview below.
You launched your boutique, White Tee Black Dress, back in 2012. Can you tell me what your experience has been like throughout this first year as a fashion designer and business owner?
“I launched the White Tee Black Dress blog as a creative outlet. It was my blank canvas and helped me keep track of my inspiration and style evolution. WTBD has slowly branched out and become a clothing line and business. This first year has been a lot of hard work, but definitely satisfying. I’ve learned sooo much! I know what direction I want to take #WTBD in and am continuously working towards improving and expanding my quality of work.”
How did you decide on the name for your shop?
“A white tee and black dress are classic pieces in a wardrobe. You can dress them down or dress them up. It kind of made sense, to me, that since my blog was a personal blank canvas I name it something I consider to be fundamental in terms of my style.”
Who are your style icons?
“I’m fond of Ashley Olsen’s simplicity and elegance. When it comes to playing with print and color I look to Miroslava Duma. Overall, I enjoy Christine Centenera’s creatively bold and modern style.”
I noticed that your latest collection has a lot of blogger and social media themes. What was your inspiration behind this? Did you create this type of line because you’re a blogger yourself?
“I wanted to focus on my personal experience, as a blogger, because I began designing clothing for #WTBD as a result of my blog. All of the graphic tees are inspired by my own interests and lifestyle.”
Have you collaborated with anyone?
“I do blogger collaborations on occasion. I’m a contributor to San Diego Style Bloggers, so the majority of my collaborations are done with local San Diego bloggers.
What projects are you currently working on?
“Currently, I’m in the process of designing new #WTBD shirts. They’ll be less directed towards bloggers, but still very representative of who I am and what I’m interested in. I’m moving to Los Angeles within the next month to study at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. I’m hoping to release a new collection next year and am completely excited what the new year has to offer.”
What do you like to do in your free time?
“Honestly, I love to eat. I spend most weekends exploring delicious menus of San Diego restaurants with my best friends. If I’m not out eating, you can find me at home cuddled up in my fuzzy pink robe with a glass of wine or cup of coffee; it depends on the day.”
What can we expect to see in your upcoming collection? When do you expect to release it?
“You can expect to see more graphic tees in my collection. I”ll also be focusing on black and white basic and staple items. I’m hoping to release my next #WTBD collection within a few months, so stay posted.”
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us Tuyaymya! We can’t wait to check out your new collection!
